Vishnu Book Report

In Manil Suris novel, The Death of Vishnu, we be introduced to many characters, beliefs, and lifestyles. primordial characters who stood out to me while reading were Mr. Jalal and Mr. Taneja. While both these hold up force live in the corresponding building and drive the same religion, they are two very different pile with connatural struggles in life. We are first introduced to Mr. Jalal, who lives on the reciprocal ohm outrage, with his married woman Afira and son Salim. Afira and Ahmeds meeting wasnt the typical pose marriage of the Indian culture; it was entirely by incident and in fun. Nafeesa, Afiras sister, introduces them as a joke, as she sees Ahmeds face is covered in blemish scars. Afira sees the burning in his eyes, and is awed that for once person looks at her, not just at Nafeesa. Mr. Jalal sees Afira as a vulnerable, spiritual woman, and marries her cerebration she is a blank slate, he can exercise into the woman he desires. Afira is extremel y rarefied and knowledgeable of her religion, she is whole faith. Mr. Jalal however lacks a strong religious base and is all reason. Mr. Jalal hits a breaking point when he realizes he cannot convert his wife, and make her see reason. He commences to read/write head whether he is the low-level one of his marriage, and that there is something wrong with him. He decides he moldiness find enlightenment by means of religious experience. He would have to personally experience this thing they called faith, (p 138). Mr. Jalal goes through periods of fasting, non cleansing, whipping himself with a belt, to except pain, and even quiescence on the hard trading floor to reach this enlightenment. When none of these things work, he begins sleeping outside on the stoop with Vishnu, a dying untouchable. finished all this Afira and the others begin to question Mr, Jalals mental stability. We are then introduced to a retired banker, Mr. Taneja, a widower, who lives on the third floor of the building.
